Tidally Driven Dispersion of a Deep-Sea Sediment Plume Originating from Seafloor Disturbance in the DISCOL Area (SE-Pacific Ocean)

چکیده
The purpose of the study was to measure in situ background suspended particulate matter concentration (SPMC) DISCOL area (SE Pacific) and its increase due mechanical mobilization seabed. disturbance experiment imitated future manganese nodule exploitations designed sediment plume generated by such activities. In direct vicinity disturbance, landers equipped with acoustic optical sensors measured current velocities SPMC. SPMC at easily up 10 mg/L thus about 200 times higher than concentration. downstream plume, lander, had a 1 mg/L. After tide reversal, recorded second time. A transport model reproduced dispersion. rapid settling coarser fraction, hardly fine particles remained suspension (and no deposition–resuspension cycles). controlled tides vertical velocity component that resulted from bathymetrical differences. may continue disperse 100+ days (up hundreds km) depending on particle size until is reached.

Phylogenetic diversity of sediment bacteria from the deep Northeastern Pacific Ocean: a comparison with the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
The variability of bacterial community composition and diversity was studied by comparative analysis of five 16S rRNA gene clone libraries from deep-sea sediments (water column depth: 4000 m) of the Northeastern Pacific Ocean and Eastern Mediterranean Sea. This is the first comparison of the bacterial communities living in these deep-sea ecosystems. The estimated chlorophyll a, organic carbon, ...
متن کاملHabitat-forming deep-sea corals in the Northeast Pacific Ocean
We define habitat-forming deep-sea corals as those families of octocorals, hexacorals, and stylasterids with species that live deeper than 200 m, with a majority of species exhibiting complex branching morphology and a sufficient size to provide substrata or refugia to associated species. We present 2,649 records (name, geoposition, depth, and data quality) from eleven institutions on eight hab...
متن کاملfrom linguistics to literature: a linguistic approach to the study of linguistic deviations in the turkish divan of shahriar
chapter i provides an overview of structural linguistics and touches upon the saussurean dichotomies with the final goal of exploring their relevance to the stylistic studies of literature. to provide evidence for the singificance of the study, chapter ii deals with the controversial issue of linguistics and literature, and presents opposing views which, at the same time, have been central to t...

Two bacterial strains, designated BBH5 and BBH7(T), were isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the Chagos Trench of the Indian Ocean (1 degrees 06' S 7 degrees 31' E). Based on their 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (99.9%), level of DNA-DNA relatedness (93%) and a number of similar phenotypic characteristics, the two strains are identified as representing the same species. T...
متن کاملDeep-sea whale fall fauna from the Atlantic resembles that of the Pacific Ocean.
Whale carcasses create remarkable habitats in the deep-sea by producing concentrated sources of organic matter for a food-deprived biota as well as places of evolutionary novelty and biodiversity. Although many of the faunal patterns on whale falls have already been described, the biogeography of these communities is still poorly known especially from basins other than the NE Pacific Ocean. The...
